Paul began his work across theatre, film and dance over four decades ago, long before the word ‘Physical Theatre’ or the title of ‘Movement Director’ existed as an on-set entity.
He originally trained as a Theatre actor at the renowned Bretton Hall College, UK, going on to study Intercultural Arts and Theatre at Goldsmith College, London. Along the way he trained with Rena Mirecka of the Grotowski company; Desmond Jones School of Mime & Physical Theatre, London; Capoeira (Senzala De Santos); John Martin and many other practitioners.
Over the years, Paul has worked and collaborated with multiple artists, venues and companies throughout the world including Wim Vandekeybus & Ultima Vez, Sadlers Wells, Breakin’ Convention, Volcano Theatre and Pan Projects. He has collaborated as a Movement Director & Acting Coach on global campaigns and live shows with Dior, Gucci, Nike, Kenzo, Louboutin, Longchamps, Vogue and many others. Why is that relevant? What has that got to do with theatre, you might say? The answer is that Paul is acclaimed for his ability to create strong working ensembles on set, supporting and developing the performers to act and move with total confidence, energy and focus, and all within a limited time frame. His methods are innovative and reflexive, finding creativity in turbulence, precarity and the art of improvisation.
Paul has worked as a Movement & Acting Coach & Choreographer alongside international photographers and directors including Samuel Bradley, Crown and Owls, Cary Fukunaga, Ewan Spencer, Charlotte Wales, and Glen Luchford. He is also an integral part of film director and photographer Elaine Constantine’s shoot team and worked on her BAFTA nominated feature film ‘Northern Soul’.
As an actor he toured extensively with many theatre companies, before moving into television and film. He played ‘Tuff’ in the highly acclaimed BAFTA nominated feature film Dead Man’s Shoes by Shane Meadows, which went on to be celebrated as one of the best 100 British Films of all time by Empire and Time Out.
Paul is a Capoeira Professor (Senzala de Santos) and holds a practice based research PhD in Dance Theatre. He writes books and contributes to academic chapters concerning the politics of moving within the arts....but he doesn’t like to mention that...
This is a unique laboratoire for actors and performers, where text, improvisation techniques, physical etudes and other elements combine to create an ensemble space where participants will explore and learn new ways to adapt, think, move and speak. It is also a LOT OF FUN!
Paul is an intuitive and innovative disruptor who responds to the energy (or lack of) in the room. His invaluable knowledge and experience of working in multiple contrasting performance environments is shared throughout the session.
